nollywood

fantastic photography by pieter hugo, exploring the multilayered reality of the nigerian film industry: nollywood. and no, i didn't make that term up, nollywood is actually the third largest film industry in the world. remember that for the next time you play trivial pursuit...

unsatisfied with trying to shoot on the actual film sets, hugo organizes teams of actors and sets and recreates images and scenes that are iconic of nollywood film.

the narrative is overdramatic, deprived of happy endings, tragic. the aesthetic is loud, violent, excessive; nothing is said, everything is shouted. and the photos are crazy:
